Taxonomy 5.0

The Technology Business Management (TBM) Council is in the process of some TBM Taxonomy updates, updating its core standards to better align with the evolving technology landscape. A key component of this initiative is the development of TBM Taxonomy 5.0, which aims to enhance the framework by incorporating modern technological advancements and changing procurement models.

Key Enhancements in TBM Taxonomy 5.0

Enhanced Support for AI Solutions.

  • The new taxonomy integrates considerations for Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various layers, enabling organizations to more effectively model and manage AI investments.

Why?

  • AI is increasingly central to operational efficiency and innovation. By including AI-specific layers, you can more accurately allocate resources and measure ROI from AI initiatives, driving smarter investments and competitive advantage.

Elevated Focus on Cloud and SaaS

  • Reflecting current purchasing and consumption trends, the TBM taxonomy places greater emphasis on cloud services and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) models, acknowledging their growing prevalence in modern IT environments.

Why?

  • By addressing cloud and SaaS, businesses gain enhanced visibility into their consumption patterns and costs. This allows for better cost optimisation, scalability, and alignment with business needs in rapidly evolving digital environments.

Terminology Updates

  • To align with contemporary industry language, the term "IT Towers" has been updated to "Technology Resource Pools," ensuring clarity and relevance.

Why?

  • Simplified and modernised terminology bridges the gap between IT and business stakeholders, facilitating clearer communication and ensuring that the taxonomy remains accessible and relevant across functions.

Modernised Purchasing and Consumption Models

  • The taxonomy addresses the evolving ways organisations acquire and utilise technology resources, accommodating modern procurement and consumption practices.

Why?

  • Organisations can better adapt to dynamic market conditions by aligning the taxonomy with current purchasing models, ensuring procurement decisions are cost effective and aligned with strategic goals.

Business View Simplification

  • Proposed changes aim to simplify the Business View, facilitating easier mapping of solutions to business capabilities, value streams, or internal and external consumers.

Why?

  • Simplifying the Business View enables faster decision-making by clearly showing how IT investments support business priorities. This promotes alignment between IT initiatives and overall organizational objectives, ensuring that investments deliver measurable value.

These updates are designed to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and shifts in how organisations procure technology resources, ensuring that the TBM framework remains relevant and effective in guiding technology investment and management decisions.
