Costing Business Services for TBM
Global Mining Organisation – Foundation for IT Cost Transparency & TBM Adoption
Executive Summary
Led the foundational phase of Technology Business Management (TBM) adoption by defining and costing technical services across the infrastructure landscape. This initiative created a robust financial model linking technology cost pools to technology resource towers (e.g., data center, servers, storage, networks), delivering clear unit costs and consumption transparency for these services. This project established the essential groundwork for subsequent TBM phases, preparing the technical resource towers ready for next layer alignment to Business Services. We delivered accurate technical tower costing, improved financial visibility, and stronger IT, Finance and Business collaboration.
The Challenge
- No standardised technical services or infrastructure relationships
- Inability to trace spend to service outcomes
- Fragmented service consumption and accountability
- Difficulty aligning IT costs with business expectations
- TBM blocked by missing foundational structure

- Financial Alignment & TBM Readiness. Connected consumption to costs, developed unit models, visual reporting, standardised for new services
- Collaboration Framework. Facilitated workshops with IT, Finance, and Business stakeholders to align on service definitions and cost drivers
- Built a reusable TBM Playbook . Established a repeatable framework adopted as the organisation-wide standard for introducing and costing new services
